NAACP Field Secretary and activist Medgar Evers’s widow consoles their young son at Evers’s funeral. A vocal advocate for civil rights, Evers was murdered on June 12, 1963, shot in the back in his own driveway by Ku Klux Klan member Byron De La Beckwith. Evers was buried at Arlington National Cemetery; De La Beckwith avoided justice for 30 years, after two all-white jurties deadlocked. He was finally convicted in 1994, and died in prison in 2001.
